Fifth Grade Metal Tooling
Best project ever. Do you ever have those moments when students are working and they are not even talking to each other because they are so focused? Here is one of those moments! Fifth graders artists viewed and discussed characteristics of Mexican Folk Art. Students then began a sketch that had an animal or sun or moon (they could pretty much draw anything as long as they could show me how it worked in their sketch). They then added repeating patterns and line designs in "waves" or "energy lines" around their work. We then used metal sheets (silver on one side, copper on the other) and some wooden stylus tools to create their work. They loved this project and everyone turned out amazing and unique!

5th Radial Names
In fifth grade we viewed and discussed the characteristics of stained glass windows, focusing on the Rose Window of the Notre Dame Cathedral in France. We noticed that the panes of glass repeated over and over again. We drew our names and then used tracing paper to make a mirror reflection. We repeated this over and over again, using the tracing paper to help transfer the name. Students then chose colors that would repeat in a circle. As they continue to add color, their name is less noticeable. Can you figure out who these great artists are?

Fifth Grade Crazy Guitars
Students in fifth grade looked at the work of Picasso and cubism and compared it with more realistic works of art. We also noticed that Picasso was often influenced by music and it showed in his work. Students designed their own crazy guitar, in which things could be seen from different points of view or made into shapes you would not normally see a guitar in. Students could choose their materials to color this project. We created a black and white weaving and splatter painted over it for the background. These are by far the craziest and most amazing pieces to come out of the art room this year! Completely original and creative!
