Kindergarten Starry Night Cityscapes
Kindergarten students have learned a lot about lines so far this year. We are now moving into learning about shapes and how artists use them in their artwork. To begin this lesson, we looked at van Gogh's Starry Night and then painted our own spirals and broken lines in our sky. The next week we used black paper to cut shapes for buildings and colorful paper to make windows and doors. Students were able to practice their newly learned painting skills and their "dot, dot, not a lot!" glueing skills.
Third Grade Owl Collage
Third graders worked in groups to create painted papers in the style of Eric Carle. Each table had a different assignment of which colors to use. They filled their papers with lines and patterns and then we stamped a variety of found objects on top to add visual textures. The following week the students shared the papers and began to create their owl collages by cutting and glueing overlapping shapes together. I have seen these owls all over things and thought it would be a great lesson for my students. This could be used for younger grade levels as well!

First Grade Outer Space Collage
First graders painted abstract warm and cool paintings. The next week we traced different sizes of circles on the paintings to create our planets. Students cut out their circles and glued them to the black paper. Students drew stars, rocket ships and UFO's with aliens in them to add to their work.

Kindergarten Primary Color Caterpillar Collage
Kindergarten students are starting to learn about Primary Colors. We read the story "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carl and discuss how he paints papers and then cuts and glues them back together to make the images in his books. We then take our primary colored paper and cut shapes to make our caterpillars and glue the shapes in an ABC pattern. Once this project is finished, we will make Secondary butterflies in which the students will be mixing their primary colors to see which colors they create. We use our cutting and folding skills from our sculpture hats to add details to the caterpillar and the sun. More images to come once complete!

Fourth Grade Matisse Collages
In fourth grade we viewed and discussed the work of Henri Matisse. We created our background by cutting a variety of shapes with regular scissors and some with crazy line scissors. We used Wooden Mannequins to draw the shapes for our people and cut them in the style of the Matisse collage, La Negresse to show spaces in between. Students completed their work by adding some interesting tribal clothes. I found this project on Deep Space Sparkle. Enjoy!
