Fourth Grade Pop Up Symmetry
Fourth Graders created symmetry in their work by repeating colors of folded paper and creating a pattern that repeats in each corner. Students are always impressed with the pop out quality to this lesson. I usually add a math connection by having students estimate how many post its they think it will take to complete their project. They all write the number on the back before they begin. At the end we check to see who was the closest.
Fourth Grade Giraffes
Fourth Grade artists learned how to draw a portrait of a Giraffe up close. We used colored pencils with overlapping colors to add the texture of the giraffes body. It's great to view the giraffes up close for a more interesting composition and perspective. Awesome work!

Fourth Grade Monochromatic Abstract Paintings
Fourth grade students used a ruler to create a variety of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. They added various line designs in different areas. Students chose one color of paint and created tints and shades by adding white and black to their one color. Students outlined the finished piece in black paint.
Fourth Grade Lighthouses
Lighthouses are pretty much a staple to fourth grade artists. We learn how to create the shapes of the lighthouse and how to incorporate shading to make it appear round. Students used watercolor crayons for the background seascape.
Japanese Cherry Blossom Trees
In April, we created Cherry Blossom trees using watered down tempera paint and straws. Students painted the basic branches of their tree and then used the straw to "blow" branches. Fourth Grade loved how fun it was to see the tree develop! We used q-tips and pink, red and white paint to stamp our cherry blossoms on top. To complete this work, students wrote an original Haiku to write at the bottom of their work. The perfect connection between art and poetry! Beautiful!

4th Grade Art Club Chihuly Bowls
Probably my favorite thing to come out of the art room this year. My fourth grade art club students viewed and discussed the work of Glassblowing artist Dale Chihuly (LOVE HIM). Obviously, we are not able to blow glass at Boger Elementary (haha) so we tried to recreate some of his pieces with clay. We cut organic shapes out of a slab of clay and draped them over different containers. We played with the shape of them by folding and curling different areas. Once they were fired, we splattered glazes over top and waited to see how they turned out. Love, love, love. For students who were finished early, we drew large sketches of our work too, similar to Chihuly's sketches that are often on display with his work.
