First Grade Giraffes Can't Dance....or Can They?

In First Grade art, we just finished up learning how to draw people using shapes instead of lines. We took this idea to our next project to show that you can draw anything using shapes. We read the story Giraffes Can't Dance and became illustrators to draw a scene from the book in which Gerald, the giraffe, discovers he actually is a wonderful dancer. These are colored with marker and rubbed lightly with chalk for the background. We glued them to a yellow paper and added a giraffe skin design to the border to complete. Hilarious Illustrations!

Third Grade Lost in Space

Definitely the highlight of 3rd Grade art. Students are always anxious to create these pieces. I use large poster boards that are donated from a paper company in town, otherwise it would be super expensive to buy a poster board for each student! This work includes many art skills including perspective, fantasy, color blending, drawing, painting, oil pastel work, etc. Students trace their hands and feet in the corners of the poster board and use rulers to create one point perspective. We then talk about what we would look like and how we would feel if we were floating in outer space. Students then completed their person with great details to reveal these emotions! We added outer space details to the background with oil pastels and then used black tempera to complete. Awesome work Third Grade!

Finished Clay Face Jugs

Ahhh! The Joy of GLAZED CLAY! I love the students response when they get their clay project back after it's second firing....They are always so amazed at the beautiful colors! These pieces are always amazing!

Clay Face Jugs 4th Grade

I couldn't wait to post a few....they are still drying and waiting to be put into the kiln....but here is a preview....I will post more when they are complete!

Dr. Seuss Birthday!

What better way to celebrate Dr. Seuss birthday than to dress up! Such a fun way to celebrate our amazing readers at Boger!

Kindergarten Sculptures

Kindergarten artists are learning about 3-d artwork, in particular Sculptures! We discuss the difference between drawings and sculptures, and what they notice is that sculptures stand up and are made of a variety of different shapes, lines and materials. We used toothpicks and modeling clay to build our sculptures. Students took a block of clay and rolled it into 8 spheres. They had to choose to make the bottom of the sculpture a triangle with three sides, or a square with 4. Then they could add toothpicks and more clay spheres to make it stand up. The final step is to add dots of glue to all of the nooks and crannies and at the bottom to make them more secure!

First Grade Self Portraits

First grade artists are learning how to use shapes to draw people more realistically. We drew sketches from "models" of other students during the first lesson and then we drew a giant self portrait. Their pictures are turning out so great as they realize they can draw people that are not just stick figures.
